In order to view up references or display several camera signals and recorded shots in a grid, the single- and multi-view modes of the viewer offer you plenty of freedom.
Getting started with the viewer
Before we are going into the details, here are some key aspects that will help to get started quickly:
- Show what’s selected: The basis of the viewer is always the currently selected slot, which can be either an input, a library or a temporary slot (more on this later). Based on the selected slot you can chose between various single- and multi-view modes in order to view the selected slot as you want – in full screen, with a reference wipe or within a grid.
- Lock what should not change: If you don’t want the viewer to listen to your slot changes, lock the current output and its source configuration will stay.
- Display the viewer’s image via an output: You probably intend to output the image you see in the viewer to an external monitor. Assigning a certain monitoring device to an output can done via the slot manager.
- Accessing multiple outputs: In contrast to earlier versions up to three outputs can be assigned in Livegrade v7. These can be accessed via the output selector in the viewer’s header. To get your self familiar with the interaction of the single- and multi-view modes, we recommend limiting the setup to one output as a first step.
The viewer in detail
Let’s take a look on the elements that surround the viewer:

Viewer
- Viewer Modes allow to switch between various single- and multi-view modes. See the chapter Viewer modes for more details.
- Selected indicates the currently selected tile of the grid. Click on this item to select the next slot.
- Current Slot shows the slot character of the currently selected slot.
- Lock Output allows to lock/unlock the current viewer mode for the output. Useful if you are working with two outputs and you want one output to always stay with its current viewer mode.
- Output Selector allows to switch to a different available output.
- Output Settings shows you the settings for the current output.
- Global Metadata Panel shows you all slating metadata fields for the current stage.
- Output Device allows to select an attached monitor device, to show your viewer’s image on an external monitor.
- Pipeline Chooser allows to select the pipeline which should be shown on an attached monitor device.
- Output Filter allows to add filters like a crop which will be applied for your current output.
- Loop allows to loop the playback of the currently loaded clip- shot(s).
- Shot Metadata shows slating metadata of the current slot.
- Group indicates that the currently loaded shots are part of a group and can be played back as such.
- Play/Pause allows to continue or stop playback.
- Create Still Shot allows to create a still shot from your current frame.
- Marker Controls allows to jump to the previous/next marker, set a marker, and set a thumbnail frame.
Tip: If you are working on a small screen, the viewer can be minimized to fit into its settings by clicking on the Monitor icon in the toolbar.
Viewer modes
The viewer has the following modes:
- Single View shows always the currently selected slot.
- Single View – Reference shows the current input slot with another slot that is loaded as reference. The reference can be shown horizontally, vertically, or as overlay.
- Multi-View shows multiple slots at once, where one of them is the currently selected slot.
- Multi-View – All Input Slots shows all input slots at once in a grid.
- Multi-View – All Armed Input Slots shows all input slots that are currently armed at once in a grid.
- Multi-View – All Input and Library Slots shows all input and library slots at once in a grid.
- Multi-View – Current Library Shots loads all shots that are currently listed in the library into temporary slots and adds them into the viewer.
- Multi-View – Custom shows all shots that were added manually to the viewer in a grid.
Tip: All modes are available as menu items in the View menu and as StreamDeck actions.
Multi-view and temporary slots
When using multi-view modes Current Library Shots or Custom to look up several shots from your library at once, every shot that’s loaded into the viewer will get its own temporary slot.
The currently selected temporary slot is indicated by a grey border.

Temporary Slots
Temporary slots are listed to the left of the input slots and they are basically very similar to library slots. You can do everything you could do in a common library slot:
- Scrub to a certain frame
- Adjust the look
- Playback a clip
- Create a still shot from a certain frame
- Press save to update the shot in the library
The only difference to library slots is, that they are only available if the shot is currently shown in the viewer. They are only temporarily available and will vanish as soon as the viewer’s mode changes.
If you want to adjust the grading of a certain shot or scrub to a different frame just access the shot via the corresponding temporary slot and use the viewer and grading controls. After you’ve finished the adjustments, press the Save button or use CMD+S to update the shot in the library.
Here are some tips for the first usage:
- Use the keyboard short cut OPT+Click to add a shot or an input slot to your grid.
- Press Save All or use Slots > [Save All Loaded Shots] to update all shots that are currently loaded in your library
- Use the multi-view mode Current Library Shots to view up a whole smart group (e.g. 101A, then 101B, then 101C) at once.
- Re-grade a scene by switching between Current Library Shots and Single View back-and-forth: use the grid for an overview and single-view for detailed adjustments. After you finished re-grading your scene press Save All or use Slots > [Save All Loaded Shots] to update the look of all loaded shots.
- Use the multi-view mode Custom to collect important references and add your input slots to the same grid.
- Live-grade a setup by switching between Custom and Single View back-and-forth: use the multi-view for an overview and set a temporary slot as a reference an input slot in Single View by right-clicking on a temporary slot.
- The maximum number of slots that can be displayed in one multi-view is 25. If you want to reduce this number, go to Livegrade > Settings > General and change the option Maximum slots in multi-view.
Export viewer images as
You can export your current viewer image
- via the menu: View > [Export Current Viewer Image as…]
and set its file format and destination path
- via Livegrade > Settings > General > [Viewer Image Export]
